23 Things on a stick

#1 – I had to create a blog and then register it.  It went pretty smooth.  The next thing was to create an avatar – that was kind of fun to pick tops and bottoms.  The hard part was uploading it.  The procedure was a little different than what were in the instructions since I am using wordpress.  I had to browse for my picture and upload it – it took a couple of tries.

#2: I am finding it very hard to find time to spend on 23 things on a stick. Right now I am eating lunch at my desk in order to get caught up with the steps as the group we have formed locally here, are suppose to meet tomorrow and I am still working on the second step. I hope to learn numerous different things from 23 things on a stick. Any and all web tools will be a benefit in my profession as an information systems tech person. I believe the current young generation is using and wants to use any means that are simple, at getting at information or whatever they are looking for on the web. We need to be up to date with what tools are available on the web, so we can provide assistance in their searches for correct information. So as I continue the journey with 23 things on a stick, hopefully I will gain valueable knowledge.

#3:RSS Feeds :Really Simple Syndication. I think RSS feeds are useful in the fact that you don’t have to goto different sites – they all come to you. A person could get hooked on checking things out all the time.

#4, #5, & #6: Flickr looks like a fun tool. I liked the book display and the fact that you could see if the books were available, by link to the catalog, at their library. Storing photos online to be shared will be something I will be setting up in the near future. Creating an image looks like it would take alot of time – creating a new library logo would be fun.

#7: Email is something I use all day every day – so that is nothing new to me. I would like to get better at using the IMS tool. As for text messaging, I know my son uses it all the time, so I purchased unlimited texting on his phone – but have not attempted it on my phone yet. Here at MSU we have had several (Aleph training) Webinars and do find them very useful.

#8: Tried out the Thumbstscks.com site and was pretty impressed. It took me a little bit to figure out how all the tools worked – but in the long run, this would be handy so you would not have to worry about transporting your presentation on another device (jump drive for instance) Here is the site and my presentation:
    http://www.thumbstacks.com/user.php
Also went to Zoho and that looked like it had more tool options (just more options all the way around)
Slideshare looked even more indepth as to tools and options for creating a presentation, only wish I had more time to try each one out.

#9: This document tool was alot like the other tool I used to create a presentation only this is a tool to create a document and you can access it any time any where with an internet connection. I like the fact that you can have other users edit it.

#10: We have a wiki set up here at MSU and use it as our Intranet. The different departments use it to provide information to co-workers on procedures and such. We did have to have some training sessons on how to use it – but I think it is working out very well.

#11: Tags – wordpress allows setting up a catagory, but then you can convert it to a tag – pretty much the same thing as I see it. I registered with Del. icio.us. I then imported all my current bookmarks into it and am still waiting for them to import. I added the tool bar buttons, so I can easily add sites as I need to. This is a nice tool so I can access my bookmarks from any computer that I want.

#12: Do you Digg?? I looked at each one of these sites and didn’t see where they would be of alot of interest to me. Being a technology person, I would prefer information that would be directly related to my field that I may be interested in reading and what sites would be the most beneficial to me. If I had the time read various new stories – these would be interesing sites to view.

#13: I picked iGoogle for my start page. It didn’t look as crowded as the others. I have used zamzar and found it very helpful in converting a file for a patron. The other tools didn’t seem very useful as I have outlook calendar available to me.

#14:Library Thing – I think this site would be very useful for book clubs and such. I am an Information Technology Specialist here at the Library and do not do a lot with cataloging. I think it would be very useful for new book lists. I liked the idea of the search box you can add to your blog for searching your own catalog.

#15: Gaming in Libraries – This might be a good way to communicate with teens, in the fact that gaming is a big part of their world. I myself am not a gamer – but I have seen alot of patrons playing online games within the library. Another means of communicating is always good.

#16: Assignment Calculator & the Research Project Calculator. Here at MSU we have the Assignment Calculator tool available to our students. I think its a very good tool for someone who needs to have a schedule on what needs to be done daily or weekly to complete a project. Its always easy to put something off (procrastinate) if its not due for a month – so at least with the assignment calc – it gets you started and keeps you on track.

#17: ELM productivity tools – These tools could be a big benefit to students. They would take time to be set up, but very useful down the road when you are looking for information and or what to share information you found by downloading or emailing it.

  16. fudge109 Said:

#18: YouTube & Other Online Video’s – Very fun and interesting. Could spend hours and hours looking at all the video’s out there. I tried to load a video into my blog, but could not get it to go in the comment (code). I added it to my original post and there it seems to work Well enough time on that. I can see this being helpful maybe with library instructions classes. Since so many students watch these things daily – they just might take the time to watch a short library instruction type video.

  17. fudge109 Said:

#19: Podcasts – I was able to view a couple of podcasts in the directory of Minnesota-produced podcasts. Two Edina Realty ones – they were probably the easiest to use – they just open in I.E. and played, where the other ones open windows media player and wanted you to purchase them. I have not been inspired to do any podcasting in the near future.

#20: Facebook and Myspace – I created a facebook page and am not sure how I will be using it yet. My niece just recently set one up also – so I am hoping she can give me a few hints with it. I joined the Library 2.0 Interest Group and am hoping to get and maybe share information regarding the MSU Library with this group. I did find, 12 Ways to Use Facebook Professionally – informative, but still don’t see Facebook as a working app. Maybe down the road I will change my mind.

#21: Other networks – WebJunction an online community and portal is one that I have registered on and have taken a few of their classes. Would like to take more, if I can just find the time. Another network I might be interested in is Hobbies – Time just seems to be my main issue yet.

  20. fudge109 Said:

#22: Staying Current – This will not be easy! I plan on checking Facebook from either work or home – just to see what all happens with it yet. I will try to make entries into my blog as I do learn new things. This has been a good learning tool and hope as new things come out, yet another 23 things on a stick will be developed to learn with.

  21. fudge109 Said:

23:Evaluation – Some of my favorite things from 23 things on a stick are flickr, Thumbstscks, YouTube, and Facebook. It was interesting reading what other people wrote about 23 things on a stick, and the problems with finding time to go through the program. I would like to see another program like 23 things on a stick. It was a great learning tool.

Finished with 23 Things on a stick. More Things on a Stick will continue on.
