More Things on a stick

Refresh your Blog – I have to admit, I only viewed my blog a couple of times since I created it when I did the 23 Things on a stick the first time around. It was good for me to go in and check out all the options and look for a new template and add some widgets. I like my Avatar – so I decided not to change that at this time. I am a little behind at getting started, but hopefully I can continue on and get caught up. I have been viewing other peoples blogs. Usually the ones that are listed on the More Things on a Stick news. It’s handy to just click the link and see what others are blogging about. I have also used the links from the More Things on a Stick web site to view others blogs. I have not left any comments yet.

Bloggers Toolkit – Here we go again! Adding Blogger gadgets to my blog. First I added a search box, as thats always handy to have when trying to find something. The next thing that caught my interest was the resize your photos. I installed the PIXresizer and tried it out and found that it will be a real handy tool. Next I added the Archives gadget to my blog which will also come in handy to figure out what I posted when. And lastly I added the Recent Comments gadget. I looked at the statistic options section and everything wanted you to register for their services. At work we use Google Analytics and find it a very useful tool. The audio and chat tools did not really draw my interest. I figured if you wanted gadgets like that you could use IM or Facebook. just my opinion!!

Join the 23 Things On a Stick Ning – I joined the Ning this time around and Joined the SMILE group. I also went into the blog tab and left some comments there. This is a very nice Social Network and if I had more time it would be really fun to check out more pictures and videos and blogs of what people have to say or share. I will have to re-visit this when I do have more time, but for now, on to the next thing on a stick.

Twitter – Very Interesting!! I think Twitter could be alot of fun if you don’t have alot to do. I myself don’t think too many people would be very interested in what I am doing 24 hours a day, but maybe some people like to know this information. My username is fishweekend. I did answer the what are you doing now question and answered that I am tweetering. I wonder if this would not be useful if you are looking to find the location of someone, and they didn’t have their location indicated on their schedule?? I don’t know that twittering is up my alley. I would rather read about what other people are doing and maybe their hobbies or interests. Ning is more my type of thing!!

Customized Home Pages – I like iGoogle and I also tried PageFlake, but didn’t like pageflake as much as iGoogle. This is really a nice tool. I found it really easy to set up. I picked music for an interest and games, YouTube, CNN news, and Weather.

Google Tools – The video on this about the google 800 number was really neat. It will be fun to try this!! I use the google tool bar all the time and my son showed me the shopping google. That is really handy when looking for a product and it gives the picture right there!! Google really has some cool tools out there!!

More Ways to Use RSS and Delicious – I tried a few RSS feeds, but was unable to keep up – so I unsubscribed to them. We do have a RSS feed setup on our Library web site to display our news items to the public. I do use my delicious bookmarks here and there, but do tend to forget about them. I do have the icon for them on my toolbar, so you would think I would use them more often. I did try to find someone elses bookmarks by just typing in a name and was suprised that I did get information. I added a tagroll to my blog to see how that would work.

More Twitter – My twitter page does not say a lot about me, as I do not like to expose too much information to people. Maybe if I would get more comfortable using it – I might put more of my hobbies and information out there. As we do more things on a stick with a group of people I have added to follow them and they have asked to follow me, so we will see how that goes. I am still not a real big Twitter fan – but who know, maybe down the road things will change.

Google Maps and Mashups – I have used map quest quite often for finding Hockey Arena’s for my sons hockey games. I have also used Google Maps satellite to view my sons new home and see what the neighbors pools look like. I created my own map location with the location of my fathers Fire extinguisher business. I could see where this would be very nice to be able to locate other business like his, to see what areas may not be cover. This way you can look at that area to maybe create more business for yourself. I am sure there is a lot more a person could do with this, it would just take time and imagination.

Travel 2 0 – I am not a very big traveler as it is very expensive. There are a few places I would like to visit before I leave this earth. They are on my too do list. These different sites would be very useful in finding out information about different places you would like to go. Wines and times looked like a very interesting site. We have a winery very close to where we live and it would be neat to visit others to compare. I liked the sites that you could track your journey online, but not sure if I would take the time to do that. I would rather just relax. Gusto would be a good site to find out what to all visit and see on a vacation. I don’t know that I would podcast or blog while I am on vacation, once again – I think I would prefer to relax. Any extra information you can get for a vacation would be helpful. These different sites would come in handy for this.

Is This Our Competition–Online Answer Sites – Because I am not a reference librarian, I am not sure how to response to this issue. I know that I can go to any one of our librarians and they would help to get the correct answer I am looking for. I have goggled about different things and have not always found the most useful sites, or truthful sites. I still feel the web does have a lot to offer for just about any question. It just depends on how you plan to use the information you are given.

Books 2 0 – My observation about books and libraries is not what it use to be. You see alot more students/people using the library for their computers and a lot less for just sitting around and reading. It is always nice to grab a book and read, I don’t think that will ever go away. I prefer not to read online, but I do think reviews are helpful to help determine if you want to read a book or not. I think Books 2.0 will only enhance ones reading experience. I visited College textbooks. I did not look to see what is all offered, but with the cost of textbooks, this would be a good site to check out as my son is now in his 3rd year of college. The Just one more book for children looked good if you have small children. I know my sister-in-law joined an online book swap and club. She finds it very useful to be able to swap books and information. I don’t know of any more book sites, but would be fun to investigate.
